The NZSO National Youth Orchestra plays a vital role in providing a unique opportunity for the country’s most gifted young orchestral performers, many of whom have gone on to forge successful careers as orchestral players, soloists, chamber musicians and teachers.

The NYO's 2015 national tour welcomed guest conductor José Luis Gomez, himself a product of the world's most renowned youth music programmes, the El Sistema de Orquestas Juveniles de Venezuela.  The NYO premièred a new work called Rainphase by their composer in residence, Salina Fisher.
