Both Directions at Once was produced from tapes discovered among the effects of Coltrane’s first wife, and shows Coltrane and his quartet of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones at the height of their powers.

Critics and musicians have been getting very excited about the new release, which includes new compositions and performances which have never been heard since they were recorded in 1963.

Nick Tipping talked to saxophonist and composer Jasmine Lovell-Smith about the album, and how it fits into Coltrane’s career.
