Chamber Music New Zealand CEO announces retirement

Emeritus-Professor Peter Walls, CEO of Chamber Music New Zealand has announced he is to retire.

He’ll finish up his role at the beginning of 2019. Dr Walls is one of the country’s leading arts managers, and was formerly CEO of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

He has been at the helm of CMNZ for four years and has been responsible for diversifying its programming and attracting a younger and wider audience to its concerts.

The current Music Up Close season has featured several leading early music specialists, while at the other end of the musical spectrum New York Times music journalist Alex Ross featured in an interactive series with contemporary music group Stroma.

CMNZ’s Regional series has expanded under his watch and featured New Zealand musicians and groups reaching more diverse audiences.

Peter will remain connected to CMNZ through its Foundation as he has accepted a position as Trustee of the CMNZ Foundation following his retirement as chief executive.

He is also a noted baroque violinist and scholar in the field of early music. As a Professor he taught in the School of Music at Victoria University and for many years was Head of the School.

He is also a conductor, working with the ensembles Opus Chamber Orchestra and Wellington choir Nota Bene.

In a statement, Dr Walls says he’s enjoyed his time with the organisation and is delighted with what CMNZ has achieved under his leadership. “[I] feel proud of our artistic programme, which is of exceptional quality and diversity,” he says.

“It has been a pleasure to work with CMNZ’s very able and hard-working staff and I am grateful for the support that I have had from the Board and from external stakeholders”.

Chair Kerrin Vautier says the board of CMNZ was reluctant to accept Dr Walls’ resignation, but understood his decision to step down from full-time employment.
