The provincial assembly has issued a statement, saying there is a risk of disastrous consequences if medical staff can no longer be found because of insecurity in small towns along the east coast.

The medical centres in Houailou, Canala and Kouaoua have been closed until further notice after weekend burglaries and thefts.

In Houailou, the physician's home was burgled and in Canala, the medical centre car was stolen.

One pharmacy was reportedly broken into seven times this year alone.

One doctor said all doctors and nurses in his area have been burgled, prompting some to leave and work elsewhere.

The province's president Paul Neaoutyine has called for respect of the doctors who he says are working for the well-being of everybody.
