Sport: PNG Hunters look to build winning momentum

The Papua New Guinea Hunters are looking to build on a breakthrough victory when they host the Central Queensland Capras in Port Moresby this afternoon.

The defending Queensland Cup champions pipped Wynnum Manly by two points last weekend to snap a four-match losing run.

Head coach Michael Marum says it was pleasing to see the team put in a full 80 minute performance and it's now crucial they back it up on home soil.

"We didn't change the team much, we tried to retain the same 17 that played last weekend's game. The boys are looking forward to it, I think it was good to get that win - a lot of our fans are back smiling now so hopefully we can keep them smiling again come Saturday."

Willie Minoga scored two tries against the Seagulls, including the match winner and Michael Marum his partnership with Thompson Teteh in midfield gives them a new dimension.

"They were outstanding in the weekend's game. Thompson (Teteh is) better, fitter. We were struggling with our centres, edges and I think he came at the right time that we got someone in...They're both starting at centre again - it's going to be a tough one against the Capras back here but hopefully they turn up and do the same performance."

Despite being level on points with the bottom-placed Mackay Cutters, the Hunters are just one win outside the top eight and Michael Marum says they want to build momentum.

"We're focusing on one game at a time. We've got two home games coming up (and) our focus is the Capras this weekend and when you look at the points table we don't really care where we sit. We just want to concentrate on playing well and getting the two points wherever, whether it's home or away."
