Staff at St Mary's Vunapope hospital in Rabaul, East New Britain province, decided last Saturday to close the hospital indefinitely.

That followed a break-in at the hospital's nurses quarters on Friday when thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of goods.

It was the latest in a series of incidents in recent years when the hospital has been targeted by vandals or thieves.

Since Saturday, patients who turned up to the hospital had been turned away.

However, amid growing community concern about the closure, the management of the Catholic church-run hospital has decided to reopen it.
