A specialised ship to lay an underwater cable has arrived in Papeete to extend French Polynesia's network, known as Natitua.

The ship Ile de Batz, belonging to Alcatel Submarine Networks, is now awaiting a ship from France to deliver 2,800 kilometres of fibre optic cable.

Before the end of the month, work will start to lay a cable to Hao, which is about 1,000 kilometres from Tahiti, in the Tuamotus.

In a further step, the cable will connect the Marquesas.

Radio1 reports that during the ship's visit the head of the telecommunications company OPT said it would pursue a teenage hacker for damages and interest.

The 15-year-old was detained last week after disrupting the OPT internet service for months.
