Life after sports - Pacific legends share their stories

11:52 am on 15 July 2018

A documentary which details the lives of some of the Pacific's greatest sporting legends is set to air in New Zealand this Sunday.

'Life After Footy, Legends of the Pacific' looks at the lives of rugby union and league's most iconic players who speak candidly about coping with the end of their sporting careers.

Among the players featured are Michael Jones, Bryan Williams and Eroni Clarke.

Director Damon Fepuleai said some of the struggles highlighted include alcohol abuse, depression, financial loss and struggling with their identity after their careers end.

"I think because a lot of the players have retired they're sort of more open with their experiences and they can sort of look back with a bit of hindsight and a bit of, I guess, wisdom. I'd say it's almost a cautionary tale for young players coming through," he said.

The documentary will air tonight 9.30pm on Prime TV and will feature on online website
