The 17-year-old has been in custody since October over the incident and Les Nouvelles Caledoniennes reported he had been sent back to jail after appearing in the youth court.

He admitted stealing a car in Noumea and driving without a driver's licence towards another town in the middle of the night when he got into a police routine check at a roundabout.

Reports said upon seeing the officers he first slowed down but then accelerated.

Trying to get away at the roundabout he swerved and hit an officer, breaking his leg.
