Arrivals have recently been affected by the political unrest in Hong Kong and a trade spat between South Korea and Japan.
But now the CNMI is celebrating the launch of Skymark Airlines nonstop daily flights from Tokyo-Narita to Saipan.
Governor Ralph Torres and his Lieutenant Arnold Palacios joined officials from the Marianas Visitors Authority and the Commonwealth Ports Authority in flying to Tokyo to mark the milestone.
In Japan, Mr Torres led the CNMI delegation in a meeting with Japanese lawmaker Yasukazu Hamada.
Mr Hamada was instrumental in helping to establish the CNMI's relationship with Skymark Airlines.
