A recent case of abuse has placed the spotlight on the lack of animal rights protection laws in the Northern Marianas.

Last week, a dog was found with a knife embedded about a few inches into her head.

The dog has recovered after undergoing surgery.

But the perpetrators of the abuse couldn't be held accountable and that is why Representative Edwin Propst wants his animal rights protection bill enacted into law as soon as possible.

The House of Representatives recently passed the bill and it is now in the Senate.

The CNMI is the only place in the US and its territories that has no animal protection law for domesticated animals.

The US Congress recently passed the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture Act, which would make animal cruelty a federal offence.
