In the Northern Marianas, a man who killed one person and stabbed another has agreed to a plea deal in exchange for a shorter jail term.

The CNMI Superior Court sentenced Huang Rui Jun to 10 years in jail after he pleaded to voluntary manslaughter for stabbing two men last May in the tourist district of Saipan.

However, under his plea agreement, the 49-year-old will only be serving three years and six months.

The remaining six years and six months of Huang's sentence were suspended, and he was given credit for 221 days of time served - roughly seven months.

He may have to serve the full sentence if he violates the conditions of his release from prison, or breaks the law.

Huang was ordered to pay restitution of about $US10,000 to the designated representative for the estate of the man who died as a result of the stabbing, and around $US5,000 to the second individual Huang stabbed but who survived.
