The World Mosquito Programme says new funding from New Zealand will help protect people around two major towns in Fiji from dengue, chikungunya and zika.

The programme's Oceania Office director says $US1.9 million from the New Zealand government will be used to fight the mosquito borne illnesses in Fiji's Western Division where more than 120,000 people live in and around the towns of Nadi and Lautoka.

Cameron Simmons told Dominic Godfrey about the disease control method which involves the wolbachia bacteria.
