The Asian Development Bank has approved a $US195 million finance package to help improve healthcare in Papua New Guinea.

The country is in the middle of a health crisis with many health centres forced to close and hospitals running out of life saving drugs.

The bank says PNG's poor health outcomes and deteriorating health care system are the result of volatile and unpredictable health financing as well as weaknesses in government systems.

Koroi Hawkins spoke to the bank's Pacific director of social development, Emma Veve.
