A homecoming for RNZ’s new Political Editor

Released at 2:24 pm on 21 December 2023

Former RNZ senior political reporter Jo Moir is returning to RNZ to take up the role of Political Editor in 2024.

Moir, currently Newsroom’s Political Editor, worked for RNZ from 2018 to 2020 and said she was thrilled to have the opportunity to return to broadcasting and lead RNZ’s Press Galley team.

“RNZ is an organisation that is set apart by the quality of its journalism, which comes from the reporters. I’m looking forward to working with the fantastic team at RNZ again and bringing political stories that matter to New Zealanders.”

Moir graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism from Massey University in 2006 after studying political science and public policy at Victoria University. Her first role in journalism was as a reporter for the Wairarapa Times-Age, before moving on to roles at the Taranaki Daily News, The Dominion Post and Senior Political Reporter for Stuff.

Moir said it's an exciting time to be covering politics, but it's not without its challenges.

“It’s a privilege that I never take for granted to tell New Zealanders about the issues of the day, and it comes with great responsibility to do so in a way that ensures readers and listeners are getting the full picture.

“With public trust in media being so low at the moment, the steps we take as journalists to be balanced and fair are more important than ever, and I know that is something that is highly valued at RNZ.”

Chief News Officer Mark Stevens said Moir would be an asset in what was an already hugely talented RNZ gallery team.

“It’s great to have Jo rejoining us at RNZ. Jo honed her broadcasting skills under our last political editor, Jane Patterson, and has led some fantastic journalism at Newsroom, so will hit the ground running next year.”
