As part of Matariki celebrations in Auckland, 20 thousand trees are going to be planted in Manurewa's Totara Park.

Volunteers are going to put the native plants in the ground which were propagated and cultivated by Auckland prison inmates. They took part in a course to learn horticulture and provide the plants, having already contributed 120 thousand to Auckland Mayor Phil Goff’s one million trees initiative over three years.

Mayor Goff and the Department of Corrections’ Northern Regional commissioner Jeanette Burns will plant a tree together to launch the Matariki celebrations.

2:20 Your Money with Mary Holm

A new source of rainy day money would be available to many New Zealanders if an idea proposed at a conference this week is taken up by the government.

The Commission for Financial Capability is suggesting that some KiwiSaver contributions be diverted into a rainy day fund, which people can draw on in a financial crisis.

Mary Holm comments on the pluses and minuses of this, and talks about the current situation - where people can get emergency cash, as well as some good places to keep it.
