1:15 David Downs on the results of the NZ led cancer treatment trial

In 2019 the Wellington based Malaghan Institute of Medical Research began trialing a ground breaking treatment, a locally developed CAR T-Cell therapy.

The results came out on Friday, and they are good! Half the patients were in complete remission three months after the trial.

Author, comedian and self-described genetically modified organism David Downs has spend the last four years working as an ambassador for the trial.

He speaks to Jesse from LAX airport, to give us the lowdown on his own personal cancer battle, the trial, and what happens next.

1.25 Using VR to prevent bystander effect

We all like to think we'll be the one to step up in an emergency - help out when we see someone getting bullied, help a victim in a crime, or someone collapsed in the street.

But the 'Bystander Effect' may come into play and stop you from being the kind of person you thought you were.

It's a social psychological theory, that states that the more passive bystanders that are present at an emergency, the less likely you are to help.

Fanni Fazakas has created an award winning narrative experience using extended reality to educate people about the bystander effect.

3:10 Combating loneliness and reconnecting in Aotearoa

The pandemic left some big marks on us, some you can see, some you can't. We learned just how profoundly impactful loneliness can be as we spent so much time away from family and friends.

It's a health issue that must be addressed urgently say the former director and deputy director of The Helen Clark Foundation, Kathy Errington and Dr Holly Walker.

In a book they've edited containing a series of essays, they explore the data and experiences of loneliness in New Zealand and what we can do about it.
