Auckland prison inmates have grown the native trees being planted for Matariki celebrations
Prisoners employed at Auckland Prison nursery, propagate and cultivate native tree and plant seedlings for the Million Trees project, and offenders managed in the community plant the trees in designated areas in the Auckland region.
Corrections has already contributed 120,000 native plants and trees to the Million Trees project this season, and 52,000 have been made available to be planted from July onwards
Being involved in the Million Trees initiative provides offenders, both in prison and in the community, with an invaluable opportunity to be engaged in purposeful work and a chance to give back to the community.
Offenders gain skills and qualifications in horticulture that will help them gain sustainable employment as they reintegrate back into society.
