AT THE MOVIES #883 DON’T MENTION IT
Simon Morris discovers that some events are often too depressing to revisit – like the years after a war or a pandemic. And he’s pleased to go off the beaten track with movies from Finland and the Himalayan state of Bhutan.
Mothering Sunday is ostensibly a story of a 1920’s affair between a housemaid and a friend of her employer. But there’s more to it than there appears. Featuring a stellar support cast of Colin Firth, Olivia Colman and the return to the screen after 30 years of Glenda Jackson (Women in love).
Hatching is a bizarre and disturbing tale from Finland about a teenage girl, bullied by her mother, who cares for an egg. An egg that eventually hatches something unexpected.
And Lunana : A yak in the classroom is an Oscar-nominated film from Bhutan. A disillusioned trainee teacher is sent to a remote village in the mountains for his last year. And his life is changed by a group of kids, a yak called Norbu, and a beautiful yak herder.
