AT THE MOVIES #950   LAST DANCES

 

Simon Morris looks back on 2023, and notices two big changes.  A lot of long-running series and franchises are coming to a close, and the biggest movies of the year are individual and rule-breaking.   

Here are the year’s top three, according the Box Office Mojo:

 

Barbie – the combination of indie queen, director Greta Gerwig, and glamorous good sport Margot Robbie, who also produced, proved unbeatable around the world.

 

 

The Super Mario Bros Movie broke another barrier, the old rule that no video game will ever turn into a successful movie.   Like Barbie, the only reason it succeeded is its audience really wanted to see it.

 

 

 

And Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Barbie’s serious twin, succeeded not only on its own merits, including a dynamite cast.  It succeeded because the Barbie crowd came too, so that they could fully understand all those “Barbenheimer” memes!
