Rural health workforce reaching crisis point

Nurses who can prescribe medicines and make diagnoses are putting themselves forward as one way to solve a looming lack of doctors in rural areas. More than 40 percent of country doctors are due to retire in the next five years and nurse practitioners say they could fill the void. But there are professional and bureaucratic hurdles which work against that happening.
