Navigation for Summer Times

9:10 Tourists flocking to Kaikōura this summer

Kaikōura is pumping this summer with tourist numbers the best they've been for several years according to the district's mayor. The destination town has been recovering from a tough few years. It had a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2016 followed by the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions locking overseas tourists out. Destination Kaikōura manager Lisa Bond joins Anna to talk about the buzz around town.

9:20 Debunking food myths with MPI's Vincent Arbuckle

It's a fine balancing act - how to make the most of leftovers without dicing with a dodgy stomach. So how long is too long to hold onto that Christmas ham? Is the five-second rule when food lands on the ground legitimate? What about licking up a bit of raw cookie dough or batter? MPI debunked one food myth a day over 12 days on its Facebook page at the end of last year. Vincent Arbuckle is the deputy director-general for food safety at the Ministry for Primary Industries and joins Anna to discuss the campaign. Send any questions you have about common food knowledge that may be dubious to 2101 and we'll put them to Vincent.

9:30 When is it time to go to the vet?

Now, for a lot of pet owners, animals are a part of the family. So, when something seems a bit off with them, naturally we worry. But it turns out our caring natures may be putting unnecessary strain on our emergency vets. Sally Cory is an emergency vet and the head of veterinary services at New Zealand Veterinary Association.

9:45 Fergus Wheeler: Death withouth debt, and the DIY funeral

The only two certainties in life are taxes ... and death. The average price tag associated with death in this country is $10,000. While many are attuned to the current cost of living crisis, there are fewer conversations about the cost of dying. However, the tide is turning, with more people exploring the option of a DIY, or do it yourself, funeral. Mystified and frustrated by the cost demanded for his own parents' funerals (even when attempting DIY), Fergus Wheeler was determined to find an alternative. In the years since, he has launched a website which is also a call to arms: Death Without Debt.

10:10 Road Trip with journalist David Farrier

Unless you've been living under a rock ... it's likely you know David Farrier's work. The Tauranga-raised, LA-based journalist and filmmaker is behind the award-winning substack: 'Webworm', podcast 'Flightless Bird', Netflix series Dark Tourist, not to mention documentaries Tickled and most recently Mister Organ. He describes his work as weird investigations, quirks and oddities, but it's not without impact. Last year, Webworm scooped the award for Best Team Investigation - for its deep-dive into Mega Church, Arise - at the Voyager Media Awards. He joins Anna for a road trip around Aotearoa New Zealand.

Sticking a boardroom in the bush was a lightbulb moment Kylie Rae had when the lockdown cut her off from her traditional business clients - tourists. She turned her attention to corporates and found a way to get them beyond the four walls of the boardroom and out taking minutes under the canopy. And it's not just meetings. Teams will go foraging, and take what Kylie calls mindful walks in the forest settings. She and her husband Steve launched their first bush boardroom at Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari in Waikato in 2020 and since then have expanded to two more bush boardrooms in Waitākere and Pureora - west of Lake Taupō.

12:00 Urban Jumble Quiz

Every day we're giving you three words. Within each word are letters which spell out a New Zealand town or city. Each letter can only be used once. While some words may have more than one answer, the correct answer must be the town or city we're thinking of. So have a pen and paper and a map at hand and have a go.
