The police were called to the store on Ruthven Road at 5.30pm yesterday after a report that two people - one with a hockey stick - had assaulted the attendant.

The robbers fled on foot with the cash register but were tracked by the police with the assistance of members of the public.

Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Todd said it had been traumatic for the shop assistant, who would need ongoing treatment for a broken jaw and other facial injuries.

The police wanted to thank the people who helped make a quick arrest, he said.

Two boys, aged 15 and 16, will appear in Hutt Valley Youth Court today charged with robbery.
