A 54-year-old man who was found to be over the limit called his wife to collect him.

But as she drove through the checkpoint to pick him up, she registered an even higher reading than her husband.

Wellington road policing manager Inspector Jan Craig said it was beyond belief someone would turn up to an alcohol checkpoint to pick up another drink driver when they had been drinking themselves.

It was alarming there were still drivers who were willing to risk harming others by drink driving, she said.

The checkpoint was in place for an hour and a half and resulted in six drivers being charged, including one who was driving while disqualified.
