Police charge man with murder over death of Ngāruawāhia man

Police have made another arrest in relation to the murder of a man whose body was found at McLaren Falls.

The body of Mitchell Curtis Rehua Paterson - a Ngāruawāhia local - was found in the water at McLaren Falls, west of Tauranga, on 13 July.

Three men had already been arrested in relation to the killing and are facing charges including being an accessory to murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and breach of bail.

Police said a fourth man was arrested in Paeroa last night and charged with murder and kidnapping.

The 36-year-old man will appear in the Hamilton District Court on Monday.

Police have released a statement made by Mr Paterson's family.

"Mitchell had a heart of gold. He was a hard-working and a well-loved father, son, grandson, nephew, cousin and dear friend. He will be sadly missed by his family.

"We are extremely grateful and appreciate the Police investigation team working quickly to identify and hold people to account for Mitchell's death."

They asked for their privacy to be respected so they could process their loss and grieve as a family.
