Southland is preparing for a potential water shortage after continued warm weather and a lack of rain.
Environment Southland has begun actively monitoring water levels, including increasing assessments of water levels, soil moisture and groundwater, and analysing weather forecasts.
Integrated catchment management general manager Paul Hulse said water levels could recede to the point that normal water use might impact environmental health.
"There is no immediate concern for either of our two main water supplies, the Ōreti and Mataura rivers, predicted in the next couple of weeks.
"However, modelling based on previous long-term data indicates the Mataura River could reach consent cutoff levels within the next month.
"We are monitoring the situation closely and will keep stakeholders updated directly."
The current river conditions and the climate outlook suggested that a water shortage could occur over the summer and autumn period, he said.
The council will publicise the results and keep user groups informed about how they can conserve water.
