The body of one of two fishermen missing in Northland since Wednesday has been recovered.

Police said the body was found Friday by members of the Police National Dive Squad.

The second man remains missing.

The men had recently moved to the country from India with their young families.

The two men, aged in their thirties, were last heard from Wednesday afternoon while rock fishing at Taiharuru, a small bay north of Whangārei Heads.

"This is a devastating development for the family and loved ones of these men, and they are in everyone's thoughts," police said in a statement.

"A rāhui has been put in place for the next five days around The Gap, where the men went missing on Wednesday."

Police and volunteers from the agencies involved in the search are continuing with the operation this afternoon.
