New Zealand powerlifter Dylan Turner has been banned for four years after testing positive for a banned substance in April this year, the Sports Tribunal said today.

Turner tested positive at the Waikato-Bay of Plenty powerlifting Championships for GW1516, also known as Cardarine or Endurobol, and was provisionally suspended without opposition on May 31.

Drug Free Sport NZ filed proceedings, Turner admitted the anti-doping rule violation and advised he did not wish to participate in a hearing.

GW1516 is a developmental drug that was withdrawn from research when serious toxicities were identified.

DFSNZ chief executive Nick Paterson says Turner's deliberate doping has resulted in the maximum ban available being applied.

"It is hugely disappointing that, after researching this product, Mr Turner decided the potential rewards outweighed the risks of being caught. He is now paying the price for that. Mr Turner also put his own health at risk in taking this substance."

Turner is banned from participating in all sport until April 2022.
