The recipients of the Ngarimu VC and 28th Māori Battalion Scholarships for the 2023 academic year have been announced.

The scholarships for ākonga Māori at university or in vocational education and training were given to ten people at a ceremony in Rotorua today.

Undergraduate scholarships are $10,000 per year of full-time study for up to three years, while the doctoral scholarship is valued up to $40,000 - $20,000 per year of full-time study for up to two years.

Teaching, architecture, aviation and Te Reo are among the fields of study for recipients.

Renay Jones is studying towards a diploma in Te Tohu Paetahi at Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato, University of Waikato.

"This prestigious scholarship enables me to follow my dream of learning te reo Māori and strengthen my own leadership as a wahine Māori without the worry of a student loan," she said in a statement.

All of the recipients paid tribute to Te Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, after whom the awards are named, and to the 28th Māori Battalion.
