VIDEO: NZSO - Play Our Part

From Music Alive, 7:30 pm on 19 August 2020

Play our Part returns with two chamber works from musicians of the NZSO.

Composed in 1996, 'Kembang Suling' is a work for flute and marimba from New Zealand composer Gareth Farr. It is a work of three movements, each presenting a snapshot of the musical styles of Asia; the flowing gamelan melodies of the magical island of Bali, the haunting sounds of the Japanese shakuhachi flute and the complex rhythms and scales of South India.

Ysaÿe's 'Sonata for Two Violins' was a highly personal work for the composer. Dedicated to her majesty Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, the music displays a variety of Romantic traits. The first movement is a dramatic piece, with the striking opening motif heard throughout the piece. The sheer complexity of the first movement’s harmonic and tonality stretches the violin duet to its limits.

Programme:

Gareth FARR: Kembang Suling  - Bridget Douglas (flute), Thomas Guldborg (percussion)

YSAŸE: Sonata for Two Violins in A Minor: I. Poco lento, maestoso - Yuka Eguchi, Anna van der Zee (violins)
