NZSO: Bartók - Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta
Béla Bartók’s 'Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta' is one of the most well regarded and influential works of the 20th century. Composed in 1936, it is a work in four movements, each with its own distinct characteristics. Opening with a fugal first movement, the energetic second movement uses the lively rhythms of Hungarian fiddle music. The Adagio third movement is slow and haunting, and was used to chilling effect in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. The finale returns to a more light-hearted tone, full of dance and whimsy.
