Singer Alicia Olatuja is one of the headline artists at this year’s Wellington Jazz Festival starting on 5th June. We hear songs from her album “Intuition: Songs from the Minds of Women” .

 

We find out why another Festival star, the trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire is regarded as the hottest trumpeter around.

 

Well known American country artists, sisters Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer collaborate for the first time on the album "Not Dark Yet" where they confront the family tragedy that scarred their teenage lives.

 

Bedouine is the name Azniv Korkejian goes by; Bedouine means wanderer and she has come a long way from war torn Syria to California by way of Saudia Arabia. The Californian singer and guitarist has a stunning debut album.  

 

Iranian sisters, Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat are the first women to be recorded in Iran since the Islamic Revolution. They use their music as a weapon against the oppression of women in Iran. We hear some of their collaborative album with the Kronos Quartet. 

 

And we revisit one of the most original jazz albums ever recorded: "Sketches of Spain" by Miles Davis and Gil Evans. How well has it aged in 60 years?
