Douglas Mews's 'Three Gospel Miniatures for Flute and Oboe' was written in 1975.

Mews exhibits a sure knowledge of the register characteristics of each instrument: The flute with its fluidity and fiendishly fast flourishes, alongside the oboe with its dark, poignant lyricism and ability to play short spiky staccatos. There’s also frequent flutter-tongueing in the flute and demonstrations on how an oboist can bend a note upwards a quarter-tone before bending it back down again.

The titles of the three movements are self-explanatory; 'The Crib and the Cross', 'The Water and the Wine' and 'The Dove and the Donkey'.
