Young composers Luka Venter and Julius Magpantay have been awarded the top prizes at the 2018 Todd Young Composer awards.

The awards give young composers an opportunity to have their work played by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The competition is in its 14th year.

Every year the composers must include particular instruments. This year piccolo, cor anglais, bass clarinet and contrabassoon were requirements.

Works were assessed by a panel of music professionals and were flown to Wellington to record their compositions with the orchestra and participate in workshops.
