From Upbeat, 1:00 pm on 1 May 2019

The Great American Songbook has provided inspiration for musicians for decades - it’s not an actual book, but more a set of songs that have evolved to be among the most popular classic tunes of the first half of the 20th Century, and which really captured the cultural zeitgeist of the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

The Victoria University Centre for Lifelong Learning is running a six-week course starting next week, on the 6th of May, in which legendary jazz singer songwriter Bruce Brown dissects some of the great tunes and composers of that era, like Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter and figures out what makes them tick.
