Man arrested in Tahiti for smuggling meth

French Polynesian authorities have detained a 37-year-old local man for smuggling methamphetamine.

Tahiti's Radio1 said he arrived at the international airport from the US and upon questioning admitted carrying capsules of the banned drug in his body.

He was taken to hospital for a scan after which it was established that he carried 64 grams.

The drug was estimated to be worth $US64,000.

There has been a series of arrests in Tahiti of people found to be trying to smuggle the drug into the territory.
