15,000 unemployed in New Caledonia

New unemployment figures for New Caledonia show 15,000 people out of work.

The figures for last year show the lowest unemployment rate among French overseas territories although it is higher than in France

The overall joblessness rate for 2017 is put at 11.6 percent and the rate for those under 25 years of age is three times higher.

The figures also showed that almost half of the employed people under the age of 30 lived in precarious conditions.

More than half of the jobseekers are defined as long-term unemployed.

Kanaks have an unemployment rate which is about 50 percent higher than that of other ethnic groups.

New Caledonia's unemployment rate is the lowest among French overseas territories .

The calculation is based on International Labour Organisation standards.
