ADB grant to help Tonga build resilient power system

The Asian Development Bank has granted $US6.8 million to Tonga to reconstruct the capital's electricity network and make it more resilient in case of another disaster.

The network sustained major damage when Cyclone Gita hit Tongatapu in February this year.

The grant comes on top of $US6 million from the bank's Pacific Disaster Resilience Program and $US1 million from its Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund.

Sections of Nuku'alofa's electricity network which are deemed a priority will be fixed up and upgraded to better withstand disasters.

Tonga's government estimated reconstructing the energy sector would cost $US45.9 million.

The Asian Development Bank is working with New Zealand, which is supporting a separate post-cyclone power project.

The project is part of a rolling programme to eventually reconstruct all of Nuku'alofa's electricity network.
