Australia says it is working with its partners in the Pacific to harness the talents of the next generation of female leaders.

This was revealed by Australia's government at the latest session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Gender equality and women's rights - which Canberra touts as one of its key priorities - featured prominently in the session.

Australia's Ambassador for Women and Girls, Sharman Stone, delivered a statement on behalf of 15 Pacific countries on advancing women's rights in the Pacific region.

Dr Stone said gender equality central to building resilience in developing small island states.
