The goal of providing 24-hour water supply to all residents of the Northern Marianas island of Saipan is closer to fruition.

The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation (CUC) said 24-hour supply is now provided to 96 percent of the island.

CUC said it is now training its sights on prioritising water leak repairs, which coupled with theft, has been blamed for up to 70 percent of water loss by the company.

CUC said the inroads in providing 24-hour water supply came after U.S. District Court Judge David Carter visited the island earlier in the year to inspect the utilities' infrastructure.

Since then, CUC Water has been working on making the recommended improvements.
