Reports from French Polynesia say a policeman is to stand trial in two weeks for involuntary homicide.

Last year, the officer killed a man after he mistakenly fired his gun instead of his taser.

Vetearii Rupea was shot in the chest when the policeman fired his gun in a bid to break up a fight in Paea.

Media reports said the officer had both weapons attached to his belt on one side when according to the regulations there should have been one on either side.

The policeman's lawyer said while using a taser appeared to be the only way to stop the altercation between two drunk men, his client pulled the wrong weapon.
