Drug testing for American Samoa govt workers closer

American Samoa senators have approved amended legislation allowing for the drug testing of applicants for government jobs.

The legislation also permits testing of any government employee under suspicion of possession of alcohol and drug use.

In the original bill elected officials were also among those who would have been subject to the testing, but this has now been removed.

Workers such as police, immigration and customs officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians are among those who will have to submit to random testing.

The bill is still to be approved by the House of Representatives.
