A new malaria research centre has opened in the Papua New Guinea capital of Port Moresby, in partnership with China.

EMTV News reports the centre, which was launched on Saturday, will train 30 to 50 local doctors to deal with the disease.

Health Secretary Pascoe Kase says the centre is part of a collaboration with China to eradicate malaria in PNG.

There were 432,000 cases of malaria in PNG in 2017, an eight-fold increase on 2014 figures.
