Vanuatu's Prime Minister, Charlot Salwai, has opened a major Chinese funded and built extension of Malapoa College.
China provided $US10.6 million dollars for the project which has doubled the size of the school.
Our correspondent in Vanuatu said reliable sources in the Ministry of Education have indicated the government may turn the school into the country's national university.
The school was known as the British Secondary School before independence in 1980.
