The Northern Marianas is asking US president Donald Trump to declare a major disaster in the territory.
Its southern islands and Rota in particular were hit hard by Typhoon Mangkut a week ago, with several homes completely destroyed.

At least 13 families are understood to be living in tents.
Governor Ralph Torres has asked for the declaration, which will open federal funding for recovery purposes.
The local chapter of the Red Cross has erected tents on the Northern Marianas island of Rota for residents who were displaced by last week's Typhoon Mangkhut.
A week after Typhoon Mangkhut blacked out Rota, the southernmost island in the Northern Marianas is close to having power fully restored.
