Bougainville is due to hold a referendum on independence from Papua New Guinea on a tentative date of 15 June next year.

There is a lot of effort going into trying to ensure the people are well informed about the choice between greater autonomy or full independence.

The Japanese aid will support the United Nations Referendum Support Project.

The UN's Resident Co-ordinator in PNG, Gianluca Rampolla, said "the people of Bougainville must understand the referendum process before making their choice."
