French Polynesia will ban the use of mobile phones in schools from August 2020.
The assembly has unanimously voted for the opposition proposal, marking the first ever opposition bill to be adopted without objection.
The regulation is aimed at increasing concentration on school work as well as curbing cyber-bullying.
An exception can be made for students with disabilities who might need urgent assistance.
A survey has shown that more than 80 percent of children over the age of 14 in French Polynesia have mobile phones.
The phone use issue came to the fore earlier this year when a high school student in Tahiti was expelled for assaulting a teacher who was trying to confiscate his phone.
