Pacific police dogs and handlers graduate

6:05 pm on 15 June 2019

Two new police dogs are about to begin crime fighting duties in the Pacific after graduating from the New Zealand Police Dog Training Centre this week.

The police dogs are trained to sniff out narcotics, firearms and explosives.

Officers from Fiji and Tonga have spent time in New Zealand training as dog handlers for the first time as part of the training.

A spokesperson says the graduation is an important part of the Pacific Detector Dog Programme to breed police dogs and train handlers in Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands jurisdictions.
