CNMI citizens to have day in court vs US military

From , 3:02 pm on 31 July 2018

Several groups from the Northern Marianas are about to face off against the US military, with parties due in court next week.

The case challenges plans to use the islands as live-fire and bombing sites and has led to a District Court hearing set for August 9.

The lawsuit was filed by Earthjustice on behalf of Marianas citizen groups who believe the plans will devastate their islands.

Earthjustice lawyer, David Henkin, told Koro Vaka'uta the US Navy has violated the National Environmental Policy Act by deciding to move thousands of marines to neighbouring Guam and train them on the CNMI islands of Tinian and Pagan.
