Vanuatu island to evacuate, but many gone already

From , 5:04 am on 1 August 2018

As the Vanuatu government prepares to move thousands of people from Ambae Island, many others on the island are expected to go, or have already gone, independently to Santo or Port Vila.

The islanders have been suffering the effects of ash fall since September last year when the Mt Lombenben volcano began erupting.

In recent days increased ashfall on Ambae prompted the government to reimpose a state of emergency on the island, while neighbouring Maewo and Pentecost are now being affected.
